Episode 266 Translation Notes

05:52 - Technically the next couple of lines are recap, but they're placed within new content so they're treated normally.

08:03 - Timber hitch is a kind of knot.

08:41 - A trenail is a wooden peg. It's also known as a treenail, which makes the etymology more obvious.

09:24 - There is a neat thing going on here in Japanese where Zanbai refers to Oimo as "ippiki" (一匹). "Hiki" (匹) is a counter used for small animals like insects or mice etc. The giants have been using it frequently to describe the puny humans from their perspective, but now Zanbai is throwing it back at him, implying that he considers Oimo to be a puny obstacle. The translation of "one pest" captures this decently.

13:45 - Douriki (道力) is a made up word, though if you wanted to translate it based on the meaning of the characters it'd be something like "path of strength." It's just a word for "power level." tongue

13:50 - Fukurou's phrasing here is like he's asking a crystal ball to reveal something.

15:49 - Technically that romanizes to "gyasarin" whereas Catharine would be "kyasarin," but whatever.

Re: Episode 266 Translation Notes

I have a question about this episode too.

15:10 - "You dumb cat"

I assume this is a translation of "Kono baka neko"

But to me it really sounds more like Jabura says "Kono bakeneko" with a bakeneko being a type of demonic cat from Japanese folklore

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bakeneko

Like I said on episode 264, I'm in no way qualified to talk about Japanese Language, so I could easily be mistaken here, no matter how much I listen it always sounds like bakeneko as opposed to baka neko.

On a seperate note, I really like the Attack FX for Kumadori's "Seppuku.....Tekkai!" thing in this episode.

He does say "bakeneko," which can be confirmed by checking the manga. The problem is it would require a translation note, and even then it would be hard to explain it in such a way that the audience understood it as an insult ("cat monster" is a rather accurate description of Lucci). The main point is that Lucci reduced Jabura to a simple dog, and Jabura in return is attempting to reduce Lucci to a mere cat. If you haven't noticed by now, we're don't translate things as literally as possible, because it loses grace at a certain point.

But it is worth mentioning here I suppose. I probably forgot about it entirely while writing the website notes. smile

Re: Episode 266 Translation Notes

I see. I have noticed that you do use non-literal translations in a lot of cases but I thought this one was somewhat different from the original japanese. Either way it still conveys the meaning of the line, and having now read your reasoning, I do prefer this non-literal interpretation.
