Actually it would be more accurate to say 36 Desire Pheonix.

Not quite.  The puns on bannou->pound and hou->hou are independent, so his is legitimate.  Yours would be the total kanji translation, his is sort of half way.  They would both be incorrect as the translation of the actual attack.

pretty much all of zoro's attacks are puns

if you could find a list i'd be much obliged.  i don't know enough Japanese to know them myself and it'd rather inconvenient to research it myself.  i know toragari, with a different kanji for gari, is a close-shaved haircut, like the one zoro has, but I didn't realize it was purposeful or that all the attacks were puns.

at least the attack names for the subs wont change, hitoanshin

Oda is a messed up crazy dude.

Found the site

As for that last statement (pretty much all) I would like to rephrase that Most of Zoro's attacks are in puns, or maybe not, I know less japanese than you do tongue

As for the shishisonson thing, it would be handing things down from father to son, or something like that

Re: Zoro's Attacks

Actually, while looking, I found an excellent page that describes a whole ton of the One Piece name references.

One Piece is certainly a far cry from DBZ naming styles...

The page is here, and its in Japanese:
http://www5b.biglobe.ne.jp/~ryu-tn/onepiece/op.so.html

I'll see about getting them translated and giving extra details.  A few of those things on AP are a little off.

I would also like to note that 108 has meaning in two ways that i know of(kind of the same thing).  108 monks died when all 108 where faceing a much biger army*from what i remember its about 5000 or so* they ended up killing over 1000*yet again from what i remember*.  and also in Buddhism or Hinduism they have a bead neckles that has exatly 108 beads...i can't remember much because i learned this in 6th grade.   *sorry for any misspellings*

Re: Zoro's Attacks

He actually said "I've never prayed to Kami"

Kami is god for Shinto religion while hotoke is god for budhist religion.
So he might be a shinto like any ordinary japanese.
Some of budhist teaching is included in the shinto.

I'm a bit confused with the 108 reference.  I'm not saying it's impossible for Oda, but the only 108 number I know of in the context that sepherean mentioned would be the Chinese epic "The Water Margin".  And they weren't really monks: they were more like supernatural robin hoods.  The novel was sort of adapted in the 19th century by Kyokutei Bakin, into Nanso Satomi Hakkenden, which was further adapted into the Hakkenden anime (one of the first full series of anime I ever actually spent money to purchase).

If this is where Oda gets any of the reference from (I doubt it), he's REALLY going all over the place with just one attack, hah

Re: Zoro's Attacks

It's good to have a section in the forums for this, but most of this should have been in an editor's note when the word first came up. Though you can't really go into depth in that small section and I don't like editor's adding frames to the beginning of eps because it takes up file space.

Re: Zoro's Attacks

According to my dictionary, giri means duty or obligation. So if you take it as two words, oni giri means demon duty. Actualy, that sounds kinda cool.

Also, does the attack "Three Thousands Realms" similar to the 36 pound cannon in that it relates to some kind of religious conotations.

Edit: Okay, maybe I should have done the research before I posted this:

Three Thousand Realms of Existence Within One Thought:

Each of the ten realms possess ten aspects of phenomenon revealed within the second Chapter of the Lotus Sutra which are:

1. Nyoze So - appearances or form

2. Nyoze Sho - natures or quality

3. Nyoze Tai - entity or substance

4. Nyoze Riki - power or function

5. Nyoze Sa - activity or motion

6. Nyoze In - primary cause

7. Nyoze En - environmental cause or condition

8. Nyoze Ka - effect

9. Nyoze Ho - reward or retribution

10. Nyoze Honmatsu Kukyo To - ultimate non-differentiation of the above nine aspects.

Each of the one hundred realms has its own ten aspects. Therefore, multiplying one hundred realms by ten aspects come to a total of one thousand aspects.

The one thousand aspects extend over three realm categories which are:
1. Shujo Seken - the subject of existence the realm of sentient beings

2. Kokudo Seken - environment of existence the realm of non-sentient beings

3. Go-on Seken - the five constituent elements of all existences: form, perception, conception, volition and consciousness.

Multiplying one thousand by three makes three thousands realms.

We should understand that both our mind, body and the land on which we live are all part of the 3,000 modes of existence contained within our minds. Consequently, upon attaining Buddhahood, our lives come into complete agreement with the truth of 3,000 existences contained within one thought, and our single body and single thought permeate all worlds throughout the universe.
