Just a note for par (1) files.
Par 1 files (par,p01,p02,p03, etc) will only allow you to fix one broken part of the file, where as par2 files will allow you to fix multiple broken files.
So if you have 10 broken parts and only 8 par (1) files you're not going to be able to fix it.
Par (1) files are rare now so this information might be pointless so meh.
You can use FSRaid and SmartPAR for par (1) files. I can recommend Xnews it's pretty easy to use and it's free as well.

the are a few free usenet's out there. maybe we should use a free one for helping distributing new eps?
I find that GrabIt is a good freeware client. i recommend using it if you don't like the ones suggested in the faq.

I don't use usenet much since, usually, if I can find it on usenet, I can usually find it on GNetulla, and I don't have to plow through all the spam. But If I'm looking for manga or Doujinshi (or the occasional bootleg), Usenet is usually easier, if you know which groups to look at. Usenet is notorious for have WAY too many dead groups that never get cleaned off the servers.
Depending on where you're looking you may need extra decoders, since some of the groups(at least the ones I go to) are damn near obsessed with the kind of heavy encoding/compression algorithims that most other venues have no real use for.
Usually the news servers is the same as the mail server, just change the prefix to "news.", enter the same pass you use for your email account and you're in.
If your server doesn't support Usenet, and your willing to pay the money, I recommend Giganews, because it's easily the biggest Usenet archive in existance and has an epic retention level. You can get posts from last year on Giga.
I can't really recommend a reader because I use Outlook, mostly out of pure laziness on my part, and supplement it with extra decoding, decompression, and joiner apps.
edit: ack, commented on a dead thread. stickied, but still dead

Usenet is great, I recently downloaded the entire Prince of Tennis series off of it.
I use Newsleecher as a reader, and Newshosting for service. Both are pay services, but they're quite cheap. Worth every penny if you have the funds. I also recommend having a pretty good computer, with my Intel Celeron desktop it was difficult to par movies, sometimes it would just freeze. But with my dual core, as long as there are enough pars, I can repair any release in good time.
