The team behind Windows Vista has recently added this to their blogs. I think the black design is amazing. But I still don't know about Windows Vista.. Office 2007 is okay for me.

Thats pretty sweet.

They've also released/leeked, I dunno which, the visual style for the GUI (graphical user interface - basically what you see on the screen). It basically the same but smoother and shiner (but im not complaining ).
I've been looking for a WinBlinds skin of it but this is about the best I can find. That actaully one is alot smoother and closer matches the colours of XP.

Do people actually care about the packaging? Vista's gonna be more bloated than XP was and it's gonna be an OSX clone. And instead of using MS Office, why not try Open Office? http://www.openoffice.org/ it's totally free and does whatever MS Office does... type boring stuff like lecture notes or essay or accounting calculation.

Visit www.joejoe.org for your windows xp to vista customization.. Got my desktop look like Vista but changed it to Panther Theme.. Also they're adding these new icons to latest build of Vista

While I agree that OpenOffice is an incredible deal at that price (free) there is still a few things that it won't do. My primary concern is grammar checking in the word processor. Last I checked OpenOffice didn't have it, and being that English is my second language, and as about 95% of my correspondence is in English, that grammar checking is getting quite the workout.

I've also got a few spreadsheets in Excel format that OpenOffice doesn't even come close to being able to import, and I'm not alone here. Things like these are a huge reason for MS Office continuing to sell. And do not underestimate the force of habit. It's hard to motivate people to retrain after a decade of using MS Office. Every time you run into a UI issue it's like a slap in the face. You know that if it was Office you would already be done, and here you are hunting through menus and toolbars after that elusive option.

This is basically the reason that I'm still running Office 2000 at work. New machines get Office XP, but as I'm the one in charge of software I get to stay with Office 2000 for as long as I want...

About the packaging... Well it can't be any worse than the old jewel case in a big sloppy paper box.

Even though Open Office plans on upgrades well I'm still using Office 2007 beta 2.. It's much easier but you'll need a 512MB/1GB Memory. I like Microsoft's way of spoon feeding..

Although I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you - Ive seen guys write webpage's from scratch in Notepad.

If you mean in terms of hardware, yes. Though I can't say its that different from XP home. I believe that if you change too many components in your computer and reinstall Vista it will disable itself. Not sure how the corporate version will work.

Don't think you would be able to think about changing hardware since driver support for Vista is still minimal as of now. I'm waiting for Service Pack 1 of Vista before switching. Then they would have every product on the market working for Vista properly and that Vista has most of the bugs sorted out.

and the box cover of Vista looks really shiny.... I would love to put it up somewhere to admire it... Lolz

An OSX clone? It's based on XP. It's going to be an XP clone with less support and that guzzles more RAM for no reason. I've been using Office 2000 for a long time, as I don't have to activate it every time, and there's nothing wrong with it. Anyone who buys Vista is just too clueless to notice that the new actual Windows OS is going to be Longhorn.

Wow...

Longhorn was the name Vista went by durring early development. Similar to how Nintendo GC and Wii were known as Dolphin and Revolution, and Firefox 2 was known as Bon Echo.

This IS the new OS. It's got a new graphics engine, search abilities, the internals are much more modular so failing portions can be restarted without crashing your system, .net 3.0, and the only OS with Directx10 support.

Sadly it suffers from Microsofts usual policy of doing way too much shit that I don't want. Then they restrict DX10 to it to screw over any gamers that want to remain on XP. There is no reason other than marketting that limits them from putting DX10 on XP.

Vista, an OS that is your best friend... and also your worst enemy.

Any OS should be like a slave, its a computer for god's sake! The second they start telling the owner what to do, is the second they own you. Too much DRM is exactly that. Telling you how many times you can and can't listen to a certain track. Too much need for digital signing, is that really for consumer security benefits, or is it so they can take sh1tloads of control over what people are running on their own PC's. Too much hash checking on the kernel to check for user modifications (ie - to stop DRM, DHCP etc).

Anyway I haven't seen how bad it is when confronted with everyday use, so for me it all depends on the level of control it allows you to have.

Is it really so bad to have a an OS that acts like a slave?? Is that too much to ask??

Alright that was just hilarious. It's so blatently ripped off...and the sad part about it is, it's still not going to end up being as nice and functional as OSX.

Actually, Apple is just as guilty as MS when it comes to bloatware. All those features they have like Aero in Vista or that video preview thumbnail thing is just a waste of your computer's resources. I mean, if you have that many apps open, I'm pretty sure you won't be able to watch any movie anyway since you'll be busy doing whatever.

It may not be a big deal for the average PC users but for people like me who need all the RAM and CPU/GPU power we can get, this is damn annoying.

First I have to waste my time uninstalling or disabling crap that Windows install by default instead of letting me choose from the beginning which features I want or don't want to install.

Secondly, stuff that I disabled are probably still in my HDD wasting space and collecting electron dust. I figure I could probably save a few hundred MB if I could only get rid of them completely. It may not be a big deal but a waste is still a waste.

And Apple's launching Leopard soon... and this means higher perfoming computers..

meh, MAC computers these days are pretty much the same as any other PCs, they're Intel based after all. The only difference is that you pay more for the MAC name and the OS.

Linux is another alternative, I'll be getting that for my second OS purely for my graphic work after I get a new PC, probably the Ubuntu or SuSE distro. Keep my Vista for gaming... until there's a good emulator for games... then it's bye bye crappy commercial OS.

I'm a noob for Linux.. and it has so many commercialized versions.. I tried it once and never liked it,back in 2002..
