X264/MP4 Frequently Asked Questions

Starting with episode 162, we at #K-F has started using X264 to encode our episodes.

For those who don't know, X264 is a new codec which will eventually completely replace XviD. You can think of it as being higher quality for the same size file or lower file size for the same quality. There are several sites of comparison, but I won't list them here. Use Google.

X264 is harder to decode than XviD. If you cannot play the file without experiencing lag, you may need to upgrade your computer. One site recommends at least a 1GHz computer.

What do I have to do to watch X264 episodes?
First, install ffdshow. (Download) (Mirror 1)
We strongly recommend that you do NOT use the default options: Uncheck VFW interface on the first screen of options. Uncheck EVERYTHING except for the [ ] H.264, X264 choice on the second screen of options. Uncheck everything on the third screen of options except [ ] AAC. Uncheck everything on the fourth screen of options. Uncheck everything on the fifth screen of options. The rest of the installation you can decide options for yourself (it won't affect the playback).

Next, install Haali's Matroska Splitter. (Download) (Mirror 1)
This will enable you to play MP4 files in most media players (WMP, VLC, MPC have all been tested).

Will VLC play the file without additional software?
It might. You can download VLC from here to try (VideoLAN VLC).  Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not.  VLC's implementation of H.264 is not as efficient as ffdshow's X264, but it does have the advantage that (if it works) it does not require additional codecs.

Why are you making me install ffdshow?
ffdshow is currently the best implementation of X264 decoding. It has several other very annoying quirks when playing other files, which is why we recommend against the default installation.

Why is there so much lag in the playback?
Chances are your computer simply cannot handle the additional processing load of decoding X264. You can probably get a better computer or upgrade pretty easily.

How do I know which version is which?
The X264 version is an MP4 file, and the XviD version is an AVI file. X264 can be placed in an AVI container, but it's easier to distinguish this way.

Do I have to install X264?
For now, we are releasing two versions of the episodes. This is only temporary. Episode 168 will be the final episode we release an AVI for. After that, all episodes will be released in X264 exclusively. Please take any appropriate action (installations, upgrades, etc) before then.

It fairly easy to reencode X264 back into XviD so that you can play the episodes on slower computers, but you still need to have X264 installed. See this thread for help on reencoding: How to re-encode X264 Episodes into XviD

Why did you decide to use X264?
This codec makes it much easier to make high quality encodes. Most people don't know this, but XviD often gives files which are too large because of the way it handles compression. I won't bore you with details, but if we set the target file sise to be 230MB, it may come out to be 240MB, which does not fit on a CD. This means we have to reencode with different compression settings. Using X264 will save us a lot of trouble.

Is X264 the same as H.264?
Not quite, but mostly. H.264 is a standard, a set of guidelines for setting up a codec. X264 is the open source, public implementation of that standard. ffdshow decodes X264. There are other commercial H.264 decoders much slower than ffdshow and those would be illegal to distribute.

Why do I get picture and no audio? / Why do I get audio and no picture?
The most likely cause of this is a codec conflict.  Something other than ffdshow is decoding the streams.  Try either uninstalling any other codec packs you have or telling ffdshow to decode MP3 audio (which you unchecked when you installed).

Why am I getting an error about registering a .ax file?
If you do not have any previous installations of ffdshow, the most likely cause we have found is that you need to reinstall DirectShow for Windows.

Re: X264/MP4 Frequently Asked Questions

Every time I try to install ffdshow I get a error message-

it says "Error while registering ffdshow.ax"

and under details it says "could not load: C:\program files\ffdshow\ffdshow.ax"

Re: X264/MP4 Frequently Asked Questions

As already mentioned, if you're having problems with installing ffdshow or playing anime: FIRST, uninstall any codec pack crap and other video fansub related things, such as VobSub (you can also restart your computer). SECOND, turn off any video players that you might be running at the moment during ffdshow installation. THIRD, read My Anime Playback Help Page (if it's up) OR AnimeSuki Playback Help Page. Both guides use the same software, both guides are done by me, they are 100% fullproof for Windows users.

LINUX/MAC users: You can use mplayer for playing anime, but for One Piece and most fansubs these days VLC is your friend.

Before you post here for any help, read this post, follow its instructions and one of the guides OR if you are running LINUX/MAC just download VLC! These guides are (from my viewpoint) fullproof and idiocy doesn't help me improve them. tongue Oh, in case you wonder about who I am, I'm K-F staff. Further posts about codec packs will be prompted for deletion. Thank you and enjoy One Piece!

Re: X264/MP4 Frequently Asked Questions

At the risk of incurring LytHka warth i'll say this.

DO NOT JUMP STRAIGHT IN AND USE VCL

The seek function is piss poor and unresponsive, if you get really lucky and open a incomplete file it'll freeze up on you and the player is very basic. So only use it as a last resort!!!

Re: X264/MP4 Frequently Asked Questions

I got all the codecs sorted as instructed, however, two problems came up: 1. my ogg and mkv files don't play consistently anymore on any of my players and 2. when I play basic avi files from a burned disc in RealPlayer, I get this weird skipping and it won't automatically scroll to the next file when one completes.  As it stands, I can play the new X264, but just about everything else is kindof screwy. I'd like to keep using RealPlayer for my avis since it bundles files together well. Can anyone help with these problems?

That's rather odd x_x
Try reinstalling the ogg and mkv codecs after ffdshow maybe?

Re: X264/MP4 Frequently Asked Questions

I tried reinstalling everything a couple of times - no luck.  The only thing I haven't reinstalled yet is RealPlayer, so I guess that's my next move for that problem.

What programs does everyone else use to play their mkv and ogg files?  Maybe I just have crappy players.  Does anyone else have this problem?

Re: X264/MP4 Frequently Asked Questions

Most people use Media Player Classic (not me), Windows Media Play 6.2 (me), or mplayer (me).

Some people are stupid enough to use Zoom Player, BS Player, and a wide assortment of even worse ones.

Re: X264/MP4 Frequently Asked Questions

its probably your codecs. its rarely the players that screw up (although bsplayer is more fussy with newer formats and softsubs).

Huh? What one?
This is a full guide to installing, and the thread is for trouble shooting.  There are no outside links.

The link to the x264 re-encoding guide doesn't have the www2.

bondas: Just add a 2 after the www . That is a guide to re-encoding. Playing the files should just require the guide on this page. If you can't get that working try using http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ . If VLC doesn't work either, then you might want to try the re-encode guide. It's best to avoid re-encoding though.

Dythim: In the "What do I have to do to watch X264 episodes?" section it mentions that you tested with VLC. Wouldn't VLC work without installing ffdshow and the splitter? It should handle all the splitting and comes with all needed decoding abilities.

People, remember to upgrade VLC to 0.8.4. The H264 support before that was really bad.

Re: X264/MP4 Frequently Asked Questions

Perhaps should think about installing the Combined Community Codec Pack. It plays everything I donwloaded so far including H264/x264. It can be found here:
http://cccp-project.net/download.php

Info on it here:
http://cccp.kickassanime.org/

and there's an IRC channel for additional help:

Re: X264/MP4 Frequently Asked Questions

Everything works fine for me dythim, but I got one question, and don't take me wrong, but is there another way to play the files? I mean Virtual Dub is good and all, But is there a way to play the files on another media player? The reason I ask this is because it will take me forever to burn them to a DVD correctly, then play them on my comp. Thank you in advance. for whatever answer I get.

gundam_fan: I don't know what you mean.  Either the X264 will work on your computer or it won't.  I don't know why you would want to burn them to DVD if they work.  And virtual dub wasnt even mentioned in this thread...

Re: X264/MP4 Frequently Asked Questions

OK, at first I tried to convert the mp4 files to avi files because I read the wrong thread and didn't realize that I didn't need to do that because I have a good computer. So I found this thread and followed all the necessary steps. I saw that I needed to uninstall any codec that I previously had, so I uninstalled all the files that I downloaded earlier including ffdshow because I didn't know that I still needed it. Now I try downloading ffdshow but it won't let me. I don't understand why it won't let me install, I did it earlier, and I deleted all the codecs. Actually I had installed it earlier with my divx codecs still installed. I tried downloading the basic divx codec again, but it doesn't work. When I try to open One Piece ep. 166 all I get is audio no video.

I'm sure that you guys are getting fed up with all these questions about downloading, but could you please help me? I'm a huge One Piece fan and think you guys do a great job fansubbing it. I'm so close to getting this to work and if you could help I would be really happy. Also, is there a way I can play the new episodes in WinAmp? that what I use to watch all my anime and it would be great if I didn't have to change players, but it's no big deal if I can't. Thanks in advance.

Re: X264/MP4 Frequently Asked Questions

kebochu: If you do not uninstall the other codec packs (Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remote Programs) then they will try to decode the MP4 episodes, which you don't want.  You want ffdshow to be the only program decoding it.

Yusuke: You only need to uninstall other codecs if you are having a problem getting X264/MP4 to play.  I'm not sure why ffdshow would not install now but would install before.  Make sure you do not have any video files open while you are trying to play it.  You should only need XviD from http://koepi.org/xvid.shtml to play files besides One Piece (except for MKV and OGM, but dont worry about those).  Also, you can try using the VLC media player, http://videolan.org/vlc.

Re: X264/MP4 Frequently Asked Questions

Anybody have any idea how to make these files work with WinAmp?

I have all the codecs installed properly, and the files play fine with WMP, but I really do not care for that media player.  I generally route all my media through WinAmp and if there is any way possible to play these files in WinAmp, and anyone knows how, you would totally rule if you could help me out!  smile

WinAmp really sucks. Getting it to handle your x264 mp4 files would probably be a huge hassle. I would recommend just using a player that isn't tainted by AOL ownership. You could try searching their forums if you still insist on sticking with it.
