Liar Game

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v200/Wizardjjm/Manga/Liar_Game-v01_000a.jpg

One day Nao returns to her apartment and found a note and a package waiting for her. Inside the package, was 100,000,000 yen and another note:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v200/Wizardjjm/Manga/Cards.jpg

The basics of the game are simple. The company gives you and an oponent the money. At the end of the time limit, you have to give back the money given to you, but any money taken from you you owe the company, and any money you take from your opponent won't be considered theft. Under the advise of a layer Nao recruits an ex-conman to help her win the game.

Thats the basics, don't want to give away too much. Only the first volume is out right now, scanlated by Null. I first heard about it on the Stable Chaos fourms, when we were planning on coloring Fairy Tale, I think it was Draco who reccomended it, but I'm not positive. Theres also a J-Drama based on it, but I havn't seen it yet.

You can read it online here or download it from here.

Hope you all find it as entertaining as I did, and no yelling at me for getting you hooked when theres only one volume out. tongue

Re: Liar Game

ok I just read the 1st chapter.
Very interesting. It is like Death Note minus the supernatural element. Mangakas must realize this is a successfully popular genre. It sort of reminds me of what they're talking about in that other thread about original movies.

Re: Liar Game

Hmmm? I don't really see that much of a similarity between it and Death Note. I mean, speaking in terms of visuals the two are nearly identical, the art seems like it could have been done by the same person who made Death Note, but in terms of story the only real similarity they have is the feeling that the main character is a good (or good-ish in death note. He thinks hes doing the world a favor) person on the wrong side of the law. (Though, in Liar Game I think it just feels like the wrong side of the law, I don't think anything illegal has happened.)

Re: Liar Game

Apart from the art style, it's that both are psychological thrillers with the premise of tactical trickery between main characters. Not to mention they even share the idea of dramatically exaggerated facial expressions
(*spoiler*I predicted that the teacher's dark side would be revealed with him making a fiendish grin and it was so)
It still is interesting so far (starting ch6 right now).

Re: Liar Game

That was madness. I like it, though the end of the first game comes together like a freight truck. What I mean is that the moment the final act is revealed, you can practically call every step of the end. That may have just been for me though and I will continue to say that this is very good. It's an excellent look into the greed and dishonesty that lies latent in all man, no matter how trustworthy they may seem in the beginning.

I guess style and presentation wise, you could say that this mirrors Death Note nicely, though of course, the characters are what really make it. Knowing that Akiyama is a con man leaves that bit of doubt in your mind into the purity of his actions and having Nao be such a ridiculously honest and naive girl that is constantly forced to bear witness to the uglier side of humanity is an almost greater set up than brilliant high school student gets a god complex. With this character, you can expect her will to break down and for things to possibly turn uglier with her as the story goes down the line while with Light, it was more of a "how is he going to get away with this horrible act this time" kind of deal. Death Note was a look into the intelligence of brilliant men while this is more of  a character study.

I can't wait to see more out of this. I see this coming to the states in a few years down the line so I can't wait till I get to start holding this in my hands and reading it on paper. Staring at my white screen while I read through all 7 chapters has given me a bit of a headache.

Re: Liar Game

It was quite gripping, I can't wait for the next chapter myself.

Also, I found a torrent for the J-Drama, I don't have any episodes finished yet, but if its as good as the manga I'm sure it will be worth watching.

EDIT: Hum, thats interesting. Apparently theres no way to download the torrent from the torrents info page. Oh well, just follow the link, click 'torrents' at the top, but 'Liar's game' into the search (the search above the torrent list, not the search on the left hand side) and scroll down till you see the file with with same name as in that link.

Re: Liar Game

This sounds intriguing indeed, although the continually-try-to-outsmart deal between L and Light really bored me after a while in Death Note. I hope this doesn't. Either way I'm going to start reading it.

Re: Liar Game

Take a dash of Death Note and a hint of Kaiji, and apparently you get Liar Game. Not bad, not bad at all.

Yeah, it started off great, but it did eventually get to the point of absurdity, particular in the later half.

Anyhow, thanks for posting this Benign!  I'll have to check it out!  big_smile

Re: Liar Game

Reminds me of gantz, Death Note only in the sense that a main character is intelligent. Seems okay so far something is kinda annoying about it though, can't really put my finger on it. Oh and what's with the eyes on the cover page? -_-

Re: Liar Game

I love the art style, and it looks like it's been done by Mr.Obata, the artist behind Death Note.

o rly?

anyways, I read through when I got a chance, and finished a minute ago. At first I was confused, it hadn't even been a full volume and the "game" was already over. Still, interesting, but it just got to the good part. Didn't even explain how the "minority rule" thing works. Not as good overall as the first portion of Death Note, but still pretty decent. It also shows more of the side of human psychology, much more Lord of the Flies meets Death Note, as compared to the chess game that was Death Note.

I'll definitely have to keep up on this. But graphic novels are starting to give me a headache. Any ETA on chapter 6?

Re: Liar Game

You mean Chapter 8 Codexx and I don't know.

Also, the artist and overall creator is Kaitani Shinobu so while the style is similar to Obata's, it isn't.

Re: Liar Game

I don't like it myself. Doesn't seem similar to Death Note's at all. Death Note's art is an absolute masterpiece. This one does seem similar in the way that it's less detailed with similar character designs. Frankly, I hardly see a resemblance.

Re: Liar Game

This story is absolutely twisted in it's realism. I like it, Nao's personality is similar to mine, I'm a tad too trustworthy. But thank god I'm not that stupid. (she passes the line of Naive tongue)

I can't wait for the next chapter, though I feel sorry for everybody involved in the story. That sucks hard. sad

Kind of like the innocents in Hunter X Hunter. Poor poor innocents.

Nope, wasn't just you. It was pretty obvious to me too. I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't say it was really good. Despite trying to be realistic, as with any story with this sort of premise, it's full of logical gaps and improbabilities. Actually, none of the characters were convincing to me, not a single one. I'm still interested to see how the next game plays out, but just in the first scenes of it, the fact that what's-his-face was allowed to just show up and join, despite how meticulously planned this all supposedly was, makes me question how well thought out the manga really is.
