I heard a while back (years ago) that they were compressing trash and using it to help prevent Tokyo from sinking. Are they still doing that? If anything they should solve the problem of Tokyo sinking before they attempt something like this.
Wha? I've never heard of that but I'll ask around. Where were they putting the trash??? I wonder if that's got to do with Odaiba. They had to keep adding dirt because the land kept settling into the sea. Even something as simple as that took years and trillions of yen to accomplish.

Exactly. Sticking thousands of more people in an already crowded city isn't going to help any. Decentralization is the only sensible solution, imo. Problem is, it's easier to get work in Tokyo. Most people who come here would rather be living back in their hometown.

That's never gonna happen. Well, never being the next 200 years... They're still paying off all those zany bubble economy projects.Haha, yeah. However, even if it doesn't get built anytime soon, it's a really interesting project from an engineering standpoint.
Oh, absolutely. I want my giant, cyber, sci-fi lookin' pyramidy thing NOW. I'd love to wander through that thing.

the buildings hanging there made me think of the geofront in Evangelion.

yeah, i thought Evangelion, myself, though i didn't get through the whole video.
bubblegum crisis (not 2040, i refuse to acknowledge that piece of shit was in any way related to the original OAVs greatness) was more of an alternate present type future rather than a huge technological future. actually, to draw a little bit more on my geek trivia, it would probably be A LOT closer in kind to Ghost in the Shell future than anything else, because, if i recall correctly, evangelion's pyramids were underground...

maybe it will be a future manga and anime studio where the artists can live just to create anime. Like the Hive in that so-so Resident Evil movie.
hahahha maybe , the name of it sounds like an anime thing to me
shamizu mega city pyramid ... doesn't quite roll of your tongue ![]()

Yeah this seems interesting... but wouldn't the towers swing? that'd be pretty bad... but then again I guess they would be incredibly heavy so it would take a lot to make them swing...

The towers don't free hang, they have supports on all four sides, as well as on the bottom.

I saw it about a year ago too. National Geographic also did an article about it, as well as popular science.
Bleh. I was kinda hoping I had psychic powers or something.
Anyways, I can't wait till it's finished. Kinda hoping to get something cool like that where I live, but I doubt it....

It ain't even started. Nor will it ever be. Here's the deal: Some architect/contractor(e.g. Shimizu Corporation) wants to get some attention, so they make these outlandish proposals with some slick CG and get people excited over something they have absolutely no intention of building. And again, yes, I would like to live in space pyramid.

Yes, 2040 was an abomination, to be sure. But in the original, they also had a huge complex in Tokyo Bay(I think the first OVA) and huge pyramid buildings, a la Blade Runner. Closer to Mayan pyramids though.

Massive over investment in the late 80's, mostly in real estate but also in grandiose projects like:
Seagaia/Ocean Dome - A giant indoor beach built.............next to the beach. Went bankrupt, later rescued by Sheraton.
Zaus(SSAWS) - A giant indoor ski slope. Demolished a few years ago for an Ikea.
Kansai International Airport - A massive airport built on the water in Osaka Bay. They say it's almost finished sinking. ![]()
Odaiba - Large man made island in Tokyo Bay. Ok, this one worked out ok in the end but for a while there it wasn't looking good.
There are some other but I can't think of them right now.

Who wouldn't want more Ikeas? Sure, their furniture leaves a lot to be desired (although the desk i'm using and the chair I'm sitting on came from there, and I can at least say they're still standing
), but their waffle cones are excellent! Go figure...

Heh, you made it sound like it failed and ended up submerged. I was expecting an underwater airport! Let down ![]()

The desk I'm using is from Ikea too...and my bed and bookshelf. Thank God for Ikea, otherwise I'd still be sleeping on a futon on the floor. I didn't try the waffle cone but the Swedish meatballs were välsmakande!
Underwater airport sounds pretty cool. I think that's Shimizu's next project.

Now that I think about it, it was probably speculation. Kind of like Odaiba, I heard that instead of simply adding dirt, [super] compressed trash was also added to impede the sinking. The idea was to kill two birds with one stone (trash disposal and keep Tokyo afloat).

To get more attention/promotion. But isn't the Shimizu corp. doing VERY well? They're the only Japanese contractor name I know.

Whoa pause button! Can you even call it an airport?? Do you mean like a gigantic building built underwater that somehow rockets airplanes out of the ocean and into 5000+ feet in the air? Or do you mean submarine-like transportation underwater?

It probably has a runway up top and everyone waits underwater. If anyone can find a way to make an airplane lift from under the surface of the water up into the air and be able to fly, I'll be seriously impressed.

Still an underwater airport that shoots out aircraft like something out of The Thunderbirds, now thats future development Ill support. ![]()
