OK.

First of all sorry in advance, this is way too general and probably wont give out much clues... but it's worth a shot.

I watched some anime that if I'm not wrong have been released in the last 5 years... (only 12 or 24 episodes, it is not an ongoing one)
I can't remember the genre of it either, but I would say occult/action related...

Anyway, the only clue that I do remember is: that the op had a white demon mask fading in next to one of the female characters....
Something looking like this....

I simply can't remember the name of the anime, and it has been bugging me for the last week.

This is probably wrong but maybe Bleach with Ichigo's hollow mask? Thats all I got other than the Blue Spirit mask from Avatar the Last Airbender... sorry

The anime you're thinking of is Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou. The female character shown opposite that mask is the blue haired girl Junko.

Try watching the opening on youtube--it has exactly the image you described. The series was licensed with the horribly redundant and badly translated title "Demon King Daimaou," so could you maybe have watched it under that title? If not, then I'm really curious what series you watched too since it seems unusual for more than one series to use such a specific visual in its opening.

I remember in the OP that the mask and the character were appearing in the same frame.

No.

It wasn't any of the mentioned above... and it was the opening or ending theme (I believe it was the op)
It has one of the female characters standing in the left part of the screen with her back to the camera, looking behind and holding a sword in her right hand. then fading out and the mask appearing on the right side.

mabey Ga-Rei: Zero or Seirei no Moribito they don't sound right but they do have strong female leads with weapons
