for all you know in the first ep shanks was PISSED! and we know he was already badass so it probably just picked up on that and realised it just bit the wrong guy litterallyoccam's razor, simplest explanation is that since shanks is later shown as a haki user, it was haki, so that's the most likely answer
if it was haki Shanks wouldnt have needed to get his arm bit off he could have hit it way before that with haki, luffy stopped the navy with his haki and luffy was way less trained then shanks would have been
its obvious haki never existed back then so even if it was made hundreds of chapters later it should have 0 bearing on the chapters before haki was even conceived, the fact that people are arguing over this is just DBZ
Except this guy is this guy. It proves nothing except that Oda is a long term planning kind of guy. We just don't know what was planned and what was "...yeah, that sounds cool. /implemented!"

New chapter out.
Reason behind law holding his chest while fighting Vergo has been revealed.

So front cover leaves me unhappy- I really hate that caribou's still alive, what a sleazy piece of trash. Here's hoping jinbei finds/kicks his ass finally.
This was an odd chapter- I feel cesar's characterization is a bit of a retread with bits and pieces of past villains and his desire to be friendly with the slime come off very weird. (smily is the name? wondering if that's the final spelling). Otherwise kinda slow/holding pattern chap, save for the virgo/heart bit.
Also- smoker as tashigi shows how hawt tashigi can be XP

Okay, so Caesar has Smoker's heart, Vergo has Law's, and apparently Law has Monet's somewhere.
It just seems really weird, Law excising his own heart.
Yeah, whatever it is that Law is after must be really, really fucking important if it means literally handing your enemy your life. But I wonder why he agreed to the conditions since Law only received Monet's heart, and not Caesar's own. There must be something between Monet and Caesar? But it's kinda weird to think of them as a couple or to think that Caesar would care for anyone other than himself, however.
As for the visualization of Haki issue, I only brought it up because I feel like Oda isn't very consistent with it, not that I was confused over the nature of Haki. We've seen Luffy use Haki (hardening his arms, forehead, etc.) and it's clear he's using it because his body parts turn black. We also saw Vergo harden a rod of bamboo, which I thought was Haki because the rod also turned black. Then I thought about other instances when a character imbues a weapon with Haki, the Kuja Pirates and their arrows for instance. But I don't remember the arrows turning black. Maybe this is just an isolated case because the Kuja Pirates were introduced at the same time as Haki was and maybe Oda hadn't fully worked out the mechanics of Haki yet. But then we've seen Raleigh block Kizaru and Luffy grab Smoker and Caesar without any distinct coloration as well.

This story is starting to drag again. I hope we get some action soon.

Totally agree. I'm really disappointed with this chapter actually... especially considering it followed a break week.
The Vergo having Law's heart thing was fairly obvious no? The only reason we would doubt is because it's Oda and he has the tendency to prove us all wrong.

Law probably took Monet's heart because if he took Caesar's, and Caesar decided to betray him, he could just turn his heart into poison gas.
No sense making a deal if one person can get out of it easier than the other, right?
But the heart is contained in a cube, what are the odds that if the heart turns into gas but still gets trap in the cube.

i'm betting that's actually tashigi's (or at least someone other than smoker) heart and law pulled a fast one somehow.
and the haki visualization thing, i think a couple other people have said the same thing but whatever, i think the basic idea is that now that luffy and the crew are more aware of the existance of haki and are able to use it themselves to a degree, the audience is also granted the ability to see it. it helps to see the action happen with everyone, but if it had been shown beforehand it'd be really confusing since we'd be seeing a reason for an attack or defence to be stronger yet the strawhats dont or are just unaware of it.

The only problem is that when Smoker asked where his heart was, Caesar showed it to him.
because he thinks it is smoker's heart, law's tricking caesar by giving him someone elses heart and saying it's smoker's. just wanting to keep the possibility for this plot twist in my own head cannon.
oh, and yea, plot's kinda slowing down for a bit, but by now we should recognize this as the build up, thing's are about to get nuts!

so we unravel the mystery of why did Law go down in the floor when Vergo showed up! (he has his heart)
another piece of info is that Caesar, stated that Law was stronger than him, thus the pact!
I agree w/ @the_laughing_fool, it is not advancing as fast as we want, specially after a break...I guess everyone is going to see live (through the broadcast) the SH crew sabotage Caesar's plan?

...To put in some unnecessary criticism, I don't really see Law doing that: I got the distinct impression he dislikes marines or at least Smoker and Tashigi.

I'm late to this entire haki debate thing. Don't know if this means anything too much, but the anime essentially states that Shanks did indeed use haki in the beginning here (near the end of the clip). Also, haki doesn't have to be used to knock out, it can be used to just scare off as well.

@wolfpack: I'm still not buying it. The anime takes liberties that manga doesn't.
Also, compare Luffy stopping that Sea monster, with Luffy using Conqouers Haki on a much weaker animal. If anything that scene lends credit to the idea that the Sea King Shanks fought was just cowed into submission by Shanks badassery. And in an attempt to resolve this, I actually like it better when Shanks can just stare down a monster as opposed to using some mystic force to do. It's cooler if Shanks is just that awesome.

I agree... like I said, don't know if it counts for much.

I'm not sure I understand your point here at all. Luffy's (supposedly) in complete control of his haki, he should be able to decide to knock out or scare off weaker animals/people. He decided to knock out the fake Straw Hat, and scare off the sea monster. I don't see how this lends credit to your side of the argument at all.

I agree. I actually don't think it was haki, either. I was just responding to Buu_The_Cherub saying "its (sic) obvious" by saying that it isn't obvious by any stretch; there actually is an argument to be had.

Look at the eyes. They have speed lines, but the white ring isn't there when he stops the sea monster. AS far as I remember, every time he used Haki, that ring was there.
edit: And yes, I know Shanks had the same eyes when he scared away the Sea King. And come to think about it, Rayliegh had the same eyes whenever he used Haki. I still don't think Shanks used Haki, but I guess at the very least, it was a retcon.

Just wondering... has there been any evidence actually disproving the haki theory? Apart from the..uuh... speed lines. ![]()

New chapter out.
Still slow paced & some funny moments but we'll have to wait until next week for the best part.
Still wondering who threw a pebble at chopper.

Surprising huge reveal on the creation of u-kno-whats. Very intriguing to know whether cesar actually intends/knows it? Or only vega developed his knowledge entirely separately?

shitty translation this early so I don't know what really happened, argh...
Did that apple not look like a devil fruit for a second? So confused...
Offline
Smiley probably died to initiate the explosion, so the essence of its Devil Fruit probably transferred to another fruit. Which can probably confirm that there can only be one living instance of a Devil Fruit user that owns a specific type.
Offline
So will we finally get some action next week? Also, I think Monet was the one who gave Chopper the note. She's the only one who wasn't with Caesar and Vergo, and aside from the minions, we have no one else with a name inside the lab. Or do we? And here's an idea: If the marines can get the sea stone off Law, could he create a room and swap the poison gas to inside the lab? It would mean all allies would have to evacuate, but that seems like the only way to win in this situation.

It seems that the chemicals in that huge piece of candy caused Smiley to lose its devil fruit power. I guess when a DF power is lost, it can get absorbed by an ordinary fruit, causing that fruit to become the new devil fruit of that type. Smiley was a mass of poison gas that "ate" the Sala Sala no mi Model Axolotl, so with its devil fruit power gone, the giant, slimey salamander reverted back to a cloud of poison gas.

If this is true that would somewhat explain about Blackbeard covering Whitebeard when he died.

But it also implies that there is no way of knowing what a particular devil fruit will look like. It depends on the kind of fruit that absorbed the power...this poses some problems when compared some earlier phrases that have been in this manga. Nothing insurmountable though.
Interesting chapter, to say the least

Devil fruits were probably logged after seeing individuals with their abilities die and seeing the fruit transform (my theory anyway). Supposedly when the story finally reveals Vegapunk we'll learn the secrets of the Devil Fruits though.
A better translation makes a world of difference as this chapter is a bit more important than I initially thought. I wonder though is the reason Blackbeard didn't want anyone to see him eat the Gura Gura no mi because he didn't want to expose the secret only a few probably knew, or because of whatever secret his body hold that lets him use two fruits at once. Also wondering if Blackbeard in fact killed Tatch AFTER the man ate the Yomi Yomi no mi and that was how he learned the secret of the devil fruits in the first place. My head's spinning Oda.
